Railroad Crossing Construction Starts at Harvard Avenue

April 2011

Initial construction to enhance safety at the Harvard Avenue railroad crossing in the city of Irvine is scheduled to begin in May and will be completed in phases with the final phase expected to continue through the end of the year.  This work is part of OCTA's railroad crossing safety enhancement program, which started in August 2009, to upgrade 50 railroad crossing throughout Orange County.

Safety enhancements at the crossing will include constructing a new median on both sides of the crossing and sidewalk extensions.  In addition, there will be new signs and striping, new vehicle exit gates in both directions, new pedestrian gates and hand railings on both sides of the crossing, and pavement resurfacing.

Neighbors who live or work near the crossing may experience some disturbance from the construction work, including noise, lights, dust, road or lane closures, and night and weekend work.  OCTA will do its best to minimize these inconveniences.

OCTA is enhancing the crossing to keep Orange County residents safe around the railroad tracks, but you can do your part by remembering that tracks are for trains - always stay off the tracks, and stop, look and listen for trains before crossing.
